Last weekend, a pod of humpbacks came up to feed in the shallow water off the coast of San Luis Obispo, California, to the surprise and excitement of onlookers who were spending their afternoon on boats, kayaks, and paddle boards.
Bill Bouton, an amateur nature photographer, was driving through town after a day of bird watching when he saw the spectacle. He pulled over, set up his tripod, and captured these amazing images…

(The law requires that whale watchers stay 100 yards from humpbacks or risk a $50,000 fine, but that didn’t seem to be on anyone’s mind.)
